South China airport cancels flights after COVID case

The airport in China’s southern city of Shenzhen cancelled hundreds of flights and tightened entry controls Saturday after a restaurant employee tested positive for the Delta coronavirus variant.

Anyone entering the facility must show a negative virus test from the last 48 hours, Shenzhen Airport Group said in a statement on its official WeChat social media account.

City health officials said a 21-year-old waitress at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport had been infected with the Delta variant of the virus.

The woman tested positive during a routine test for airport staff conducted Thursday, they said.

Shenzhen, a mainland Chinese city neighbouring Hong Kong, is home to some of Asia’s biggest tech companies including telecoms equipment maker Huawei and gaming giant Tencent.

China on Friday reported 30 new coronavirus cases, including six local transmissions in the southern province of Guangdong where Shenzhen is located.

The airport entry restrictions came into effect from 1 pm local time Saturday (0500 GMT).

Nearly 400 flights to and from the airport were cancelled Friday, data from tracker VariFlight showed. Dozens of flights scheduled for Saturday morning were also dropped.

Passengers would receive refunds on their tickets without penalty, the authority said.

Millions of Shenzhen residents have been tested for the virus in recent weeks after a small outbreak at the city’s port earlier this month.

Moscow records pandemic high for COVID cases for second day running

moscow
Credit: CC0 Public Domain

Russia’s capital Moscow on Saturday reported a pandemic high for new coronavirus cases for the second straight day, while Saint Petersburg introduced fresh restrictions ahead of its Euro 2020 matches.

Brazil’s death toll from the pandemic meanwhile passed the half-million mark on Saturday.

Moscow’s hospitals were flooded with new patients due to the Delta variant, registering 9,120 new coronavirus infections in 24 hours, according to government figures. That made it a second consecutive high, topping the previous day’s total of 9,056 cases.

Those figures have ballooned from just 3,000 daily two weeks ago, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin saying the highly infectious Delta variant first identified in India represented nearly 90 percent of new cases.

Across the country, officials recorded 17,906 cases and 466 deaths over 24 hours—76 of them in Moscow—the worst nationwide figures since March 13.

The new wave of infections came as Russia’s second city of Saint Petersburg, the country’s worst COVID hotspot after Moscow, is slated to host several Euro 2020 matches—including a quarter-final on July 2. They are expected to draw thousands of European football fans.

Officials are now rushing to reintroduce pandemic restrictions and roll out new beds dedicated to coronavirus patients.

On Saturday, Saint Petersburg announced it would restrict access to its main Euro 2020 fan zone on Konyushenaya Square to 3,000 people, down from 5,000, having earlier banned food sales in the fan zones.

Measures have been more drastic in Moscow, where Sobyanin on Friday shut down the city’s fan zone, banned gatherings of more than 1,000, suspended all mass entertainment events and closed dance halls.

In Brazil, meanwhile, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga tweeted: “500,000 lives lost due to the pandemic that affects our Brazil and the world.”

He did not give the death toll from the past 24 hours, but as of Friday, the ministry had recorded 498,499 deaths, with a daily average of more than 2,000 over the last seven days.

Delta variant

The pandemic is also casting a shadow over the Tokyo Olympics which will start in just over a month.

The Japanese capital’s governor said Saturday the city would cancel all public viewing events.

Rather than set up six planned viewing sites, “we will make greater use of the web to create exciting atmospheres for the Games,” Yuriko Koike said.

The faster-spreading Delta variant is a top concern in many countries

Fears over the rapid spread of the variant prompted the airport in the southern Chinese city Shenzhen to cancel hundreds of flights and tighten entry controls Saturday, after a single restaurant employee tested positive.

Anyone entering the facility must show a negative virus test from the last 48 hours, Shenzhen Airport Group said in a statement on its official WeChat social media account.

In Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni announced new restrictions, including the suspension of inland travel and an extended overnight curfew, as “the hospitals are full”.

“The rapid surge in the intensity of the pandemic appears unprecedented, but still manageable” with curbs similar to those employed at the beginning of the outbreak, Museveni added.

Mandatory jabs

In Russia, Moscow mayor Sobyanin extended closures announced last weekend of food halls in public spaces like malls, as well as overnight shuttering of bars and restaurants.

The city has also ordered mandatory vaccination for residents working in the service industry, saying some 60 percent would have to be fully inoculated by August 15.

Saint Petersburg has announced it will try to vaccinate 65 percent of its civil servants by August 15.

Although free jabs have been available to Russians since December, just 19.5 million out of a population of some 146 million have received at least one dose of a vaccine, according to the Gogov website which tallies COVID figures from the regions and the media.

In Moscow, only 1.5 million of the capital’s roughly 12 million people have been fully vaccinated.

A recent independent survey found that 60 percent of Russians do not intend to be vaccinated.

Russia is among the countries hit hardest by the pandemic, with the sixth-highest number of cases in the world, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

It overtook Britain on Thursday as the European country having suffered the most COVID deaths, reaching 128,911 by Saturday. Kremlin critics argue the real figure is far higher due to undercounting by authorities.

COVID, Quickly, Episode 9: Delta Variant, Global Vaccine Shortfalls, Beers for Shots

Credit: Ryan Reid

Today we bring you a new episode in our podcast series: COVID, Quickly. Every two weeks, Scientific American’s senior health editors Tanya Lewis and Josh Fischman catch you up on the essential developments in the pandemic: from vaccines to new variants and everything in between.

Tanya Lewis: Hi, and welcome to COVID, Quickly, a Scientific American podcast series!

Josh Fischman: This is your fast-track update on the COVID pandemic. We bring you up to speed on the science behind the most urgent questions about the virus and the disease. We demystify the research and help you understand what it really means.

Lewis: I’m Tanya Lewis.

Fischman: I’m Josh Fischman.

Lewis: And we’re Scientific American’s senior health editors. Today we’re talking about the danger of the Delta variant …

Fischman: The patchwork vaccine effort around the world …

Lewis: And getting free lottery tickets or beers with your shot in the U.S.

The latest virus variant to grab headlines is called Delta. Why are scientists particularly concerned about it, Josh?

Fischman: Because it’s more transmissible, and it seems to be putting more people in the hospital, Tanya. And it’s on the rise around the globe.

Delta was first spotted in India and spread quickly to 74 countries. In England, it accounts for 90 percent of new cases, taking over from the version called Alpha. It’s got a bunch of mutations that seem to help it get inside human cells and evade antibodies that hunt for it. Researchers at Public Health England found the chances of people passing Delta around their households were 64 percent higher than with Alpha. That’s a big jump.

Lewis: England had started opening up more recently, too. Couldn’t that also have led to more infections in addition to some feature of the variant itself?

Fischman: Yeah, there’s stuff going on that can heighten the Delta numbers. People started traveling; businesses and restaurants were opening. But the bottom line is: there’s a steep climb in Delta cases.

And Delta appears to send twice as many people to the hospital as Alpha does. That’s severe illness, such as being unable to breathe. A lot of these people are younger, under age 30, according to research in the medical journal the Lancet.

This isn’t all doom. Even with Delta, vaccines keep people safe. Health records in Scotland show two shots of the Pfizer vaccine blocked Delta infection in 80 percent of people. Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines kept practically everyone who got those shots out of the hospital, early data from England show.

So what’s this all mean? Already in the U.S., Delta accounts for 10 percent of infections. So it’s coming. With summer reopenings and people mingling, unvaccinated people could get Delta during the next few months, setting up an ugly fall. Getting vaccinated, the numbers show, is the best route to keeping infections down and getting life closer to normal.

Fischman: More than half of the adult U.S. population has been fully vaccinated now. What’s the situation like in other countries?

Lewis: So far, most of the vaccines have gone to the wealthiest countries. In many low-income countries, less than 1 percent of people have gotten a single dose.

An international effort called COVAX was supposed to fill this gap. Its goal was to distribute two billion vaccine doses by the end of this year. But as freelance contributor Sara Reardon reported for us earlier this week, COVAX is far behind where it needs to be.

A big part of the problem is that wealthy countries bought up all the vaccine doses before many vaccines were even approved. COVAX says part of the delay was because it lacked enough funding early on to secure those doses.

Even when vaccines are available, they may be perceived as less effective or less safe than the vaccines available in richer countries. For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1.7 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine sat idle while European drug regulators weighed the risk of blood clots. By the time the vaccines were cleared for use, they were about to expire, and many were shipped elsewhere.

Even if COVAX reaches its goal, it would still only vaccinate 20 percent of every country’s population. So many countries have been forced to negotiate their own deals with vaccine makers as well.

There is some good news. Wealthy countries recently pledged a total of 870 million vaccines to COVAX, half of them by the end of this year. That still leaves a long way to go, though.

Fischman: Clearly vaccination is a lifesaving idea. But in the U.S., it’s been tough persuading some people to get these shots. Now states and businesses are using creative lures to get folks to roll up their sleeves. You just wrote about some free stuff people can get. What kinds of rewards?

Lewis: Several states, including Ohio, California and New York, have created lotteries with prizes ranging up to $1 million or more for people who have gotten vaccinated. Some states are also offering vaccinated teenagers the chance to win scholarships to state colleges and universities.

Other states are trying more unusual approaches. West Virginia is raffling off rifles and shotguns. Washington State is letting marijuana dispensaries give out free joints. And New Jersey and Connecticut have been giving away free beer! These offers may not last forever, so if you’ve just gotten vaccinated, check for updates.

And these kinds of incentives work, experts say. A survey of unvaccinated people found that offering a cash reward or saying they wouldn’t need to wear masks anymore made people more likely to say they would get a shot. And if the end result means more vaccinated people, that’s a good thing!

Now you’re up to speed. Thanks for joining us.

Fischman: Come back in two weeks for the next episode of COVID, Quickly! And check out SciAm.com for updated and in-depth COVID news.

The Unequal Circulation of Covid Vaccines Is a Sneak Peek of the Coming Environment Apartheid

        featured image

A week after the G7 patted itself on the back for concurring charitably to give out 500 million dosages of Covid-19 vaccines (” a drop in the ocean,” as Amnesty International put it), a really various group of leaders will assemble practically on Friday to hash out a more long lasting method to bring the pandemic to an end. As the environment crisis speeds up, the conference might likewise sneak peek an option to the G7’s underwhelming environment dithering in Cornwall recently.

Just 6.2 percent of the world has actually been completely immunized, with simply 0.3 of shots having actually gone to low-income nations. Eight-five percent have actually gone to upper-middle- and high-income nations like the United States, which has 131 percent of the world’s vaccines and simply 4.3 percent of its population.

The Top for Vaccine Internationalism, assembled by the Progressive International, unites federal government ministers from Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Cuba, and Venezuela, and agents of local federal governments in Kenya and India, from the state of Kerala, together with opposition leaders, healthcare unions, academics, and public health supporters. 4 vaccine producers will likewise exist: BioFarmaCuba; the Brazilian state producer Fiocruz; Virchow Laboratories, an Indian producer with an existence in over 100 nations; and Canadian company Biolyse, which is looking for mandatory licensing contracts from its federal government to produce Johnson & Johnson vaccines. After a kick-off Friday, guests– weighted towards the low- and middle-income nations still having a hard time to immunize their populations– will satisfy independently over the weekend to go over brand-new vaccine advancement and innovation swimming pools, sharing production capability, along with the possible to bypass copyright securities– what Bolivian f oreign minister and top individual Rogelio Mayta has actually called “cumulative disobedience

” We have the capability to end this pandemic, producing and dispersing Covid-19 vaccines for all. And yet completion is no place in sight. A nexus of Huge Pharma and Worldwide North federal governments is standing in the method,” top planner and Progressive International cabinet member Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla stated in an emailed press declaration. “As long as the infection spreads, it can alter and move. Ending the pandemic is not a concern of charity. It is a concern of survival. The longer we wait, the more we are at danger: billions of lives, North and South, immunized and unvaccinated.”

The global vaccine rollout has actually been a catastrophe. Early on, the Covax center– a job of the public-private Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance promised to supply 2 billion dosages to the establishing world in2021 Far, it’s provided simply 83 million. “That is a failure by any requirement of reasoning or sense or mathematics,” Bangalore-based author, advocate, and top participant Achal Prabhala informed me by phone. Early on, he discussed, Covax decided to centralize production of the dosages it prepared to disperse at the Serum Institute in India. In the middle of a destructive break out because nation, exports stopped in March and, with them, wants to quickly immunize the establishing world. “Covax was ravaged by this since of their own bad preparation,” Prabhala stated– however its issues run much deeper.

Like its moms and dad company, Gavi has actually mainly depended upon the “largesse of pharmaceutical business,” Prabhala stated: “It really thought, in the pandemic, that all you required to do is speak with pharmaceutical business.” It provided to purchase jabs from Western makers, consisting of AstraZeneca and Novavax, prior to they had actually been authorized, making it a bargain for those business.

An associated wrinkle is that Covax will just disperse vaccines authorized in the West, or by the World Health Company. Because that has, up until just recently, just consisted of U.S. or U.K.-made vaccines, it mostly overlooked those produced in other places, like China’s Sinovac and CoronaVac. Now that Sinovac and Sinopharm, another Chinese vaccine, have actually gotten WHO approval, Covax will likely depend on them to assist satisfy its currently alarmingly modest targets and get the slack left by more sparsely produced Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines. They have actually been authorized, Covax has not provided any Moderna or Johnson & Johnson dosages.

The continuing crisis of worldwide vaccine rollout is troubling not simply in its own right however for how it recommends the environment crisis will be dealt with. There are a lot of overlaps in between the 2 obstacles: The nations being worst struck by Covid-19 likewise tend to be worst struck by climate-fueled storms, dry spells, and heatwaves. The strongly unequal rollout brings other lessons, too. The White Home has actually likewise been eager to frame environment action as a lucrative chance for U.S. business to hoard important green copyright and outcompete the administration’s geopolitical competitors. As Biden informed a joint session of Congress, “We need to establish and control the items and innovations of the future: sophisticated batteries, biotechnology, computer system chips, tidy energy,” in order for the U.S. to “win the twenty-first century.” Making those vital innovations based on the type of retrograde copyright defenses now constraining vaccines will permit corporations to charge inflated leas for the right to decarbonize. That not just postures barriers to releasing tidy energy however might make inexpensive brand-new coal plants– most likely to keep running for years– a more appealing alternative for nations where millions still do not have electrical power. No nation will “win the twenty-first century” so long as financiers and executives can choke off courses to low-carbon advancement.

When it concerns environment financing, public-private charity designs in the vein of Covax are currently stopping working. In 2009, rich federal governments promised to provide $100 billion for mitigation and adjustment financing to the establishing world, in big part by “setting in motion” personal capital. That hasn’t emerged, and much of the funding up until now has actually been available in the kind of loans that contribute to lots of poorer nations’ currently squashing financial obligation concerns. There’s very little factor to believe that U.S. tidy energy makers– which, like its biotech business, have actually gotten generous public financing– will be anymore upcoming with carbon capture or battery production than Pfizer and Moderna have actually been with vaccines.

Whether on tidy energy or jabs, dumping patent defenses is just an initial step. Under extreme pressure, the Biden administration lastly did assistance waiving Covid-19- associated IP at the World Trade Company in Might. What that didn’t featured was a dedication to force pharmaceutical business to share knowledge for how to produce those vaccines with the remainder of the world, regardless of the federal government having actually moneyed the standard research study that produced them. “There are real physical limitations on what Pfzier and Moderna can make,” Prabhala states. “We have actually seen what they have, and it’s been hardly enough for the wealthiest nations. It’s a stretch to think of that when they can’t please the highest-paying nations, they can take the area for everybody else. The only method is to open the production of vaccines we understand work.”

The top represents an effort for lower-income nations to work together in the vacuum left by richer nations’ inactiveness, with lessons for browsing the hotter, wetter, and possibly sicker years to come. A number of low- and middle-income nation federal governments are now trying to find the capability to produce vaccines locally, instead of to have paltry varieties of them provided as charity. Bilateral offers have actually currently taken place in between some nations in the worldwide south, outside the province of either Covax or the U.S. Iran, for example, has actually accepted produce Cuban vaccines. At the top, Venezuela– another nation suffering under U.S. sanctions– is anticipated to reveal it will produce Cuban dosages locally. The state-owned Chinese company Sinopharm has an arrangement with the United Arab Emirates to produce as much as 200 billion dosages a month there, in addition to co-production offers somewhere else that include providing basic materials and technical competence. “They’re dispersing the capability to make the vaccine, which is really various than how Western pharmaceutical makers have actually been running,” resulting in severe lacks, Prabhala states. “There’s a sort of ideological capture that states we can just can be conserved by a drug that comes out of London or New York City. That’s not actually real.”

The outcomes of the top will be revealed at an interview on Monday. If it achieves success, it might assist bring a faster end to the pandemic. It may likewise develop a brand-new, more solidaristic design for figuring out the other crises the twenty-first century is currently bringing our method.
